Scouting Night walk Sat 28th. til Sun 29th. Oct 1 Month ago
I've been contacted to see if the combined voluntary sector would be interested in supporting a large Scout night hike in October, to be called 'Star Trek'.

Basically it could involve up to 30 teams of maximum 6 Scouts or Explorers navigating their way around approximately 15 'bases'where tasks will have to be carried out and scored, spread over a 15 - 20km course. The team at the end with the highest score wins.

I was called in by Simon Faraday-Drake, Emergency Planning Officer at Broadland Disrtict Council and father of a Scout - he thinks it could be a fantastic opportuinty to not only support the Scouts, but run a worthwhile exercise. He will be investigating using the opportunity for Council staff and volunteers to practice setting up and operating a rest centre, and there are various organisation / communication / support & logistics tasks that would be much appreciated, some spread over a 12 hour period.

At this point I'm looking to get expressions of interest, and to get the date in people's diaries - details will be forthcoming in due course as and when known, but these are the facts as we currently understand them:

Times - start 18:00 on Saturday 28th October, end 08:00 on Sunday 29th
Location - somewhere north of Norwich - TBC but in Broadland Council boundary.
Assistance requested:
Establish 'control' at HQ and staff it for the duration of the exercise; keeping a log of which teams are where, responding to incidents and issues, coordinating voluntary responders. This will likely need shifts.
Provide communication links from each of the 15 bases back to control for the duration of the exercise (will probably need involvement of licenced amateurs from all organisations to support Raynet) reporting arrival and departure of teams, scores, and any incidents etc.
Provide First Aid & incident response for the event
Provide support to the Rest Centre exercise (probably only running for the first hour or so of the event) including potentially coordinating external volunteers
Provide any required logistic support to the event (not including routine transport of teams as this will require at least 6 passenger seats per vehicle to comply with Scout Safeguarding guidelines)
Possibly manning one or more bases supervising simple tasks for teams to complete (TBC)

We will Probably need as many members as possible to support this event .
please comment below with your interest.

I would love to have done this but will be coming back from holiday. Don't think I'll be back in time but if it looks like I will, I'll get in touch at short notice.

Sounds like a cheeky carbon copy of Pondy's old Extensive Toddle exercise (ask the old and bold) which I'm pretty sure was known to the Scouts as 'Star Trek'. Was always a fun night with a bit of night time greenlaning on some interesting tracks

Definitely up for this one.

I'm "expressing an interest", might be able to commit when more details are known.

No more names? Was always a good night out when we supported a very similar Scout ex in the past.

I'd be doing it if not on holiday. Sad to be missing it.
